Caspar Rock: Monday markets - the week ahead on 12 August
Investors will likely focus on political risks in a relatively quiet week for economic data.
- Eurozone GDP, out on Wednesday, is expected to show a slight contraction in activity. US retail sales figures on Thursday will provide insight into the health of the American consumer.
- Italy’s government collapsed last week, triggering a selloff in both Italian equities and government bonds. There is likely to be another general election in the autumn.
- Elsewhere, government bonds continue to rally, driven by concern over the escalation of the US-China trade war.
