Meet Eric - 1 column

In keeping with our theme of progress, we are delighted to welcome Eric to the Institute of Engineering and Technology. Eric was the UK's first robot and has recently been rebuilt by the Science Museum.  Created less than a decade after the word robot was first used, Eric was quintessentially British and deemed an almost perfect man by the New York press.  Eric's first public performance was on 20 September 1928, when he opened the Society of Model Engineers' annual exhibition 'with a really sparkling speech'. The society had originally invited the Duke of York to open the event but he declined, so Captain W. H. Richards decided as 'it is a mechanical show, let us have a mechanical man to open it' and started work on creating Eric.

This will be Eric's first appearance at a conference since he disappeared, after travelling the globe with his makers, visiting the UK, US and Europe.

Eric has been in the recent UK and international press too... read some recent articles about the project here:

We are proud to have supported the Kickstarter campaign to rebuild Eric and look forward to hearing from both Eric and the curator of the Science Museum's new Robots exhibition, Ben Russell about the enormous progress in robotics over the last century.
